Däcktrycksövervakning, often abbreviated as TPMS from the English "Tire Pressure Monitoring System," refers to an electronic system that monitors the air pressure inside pneumatic tires on various types of vehicles. The primary purpose of TPMS is to alert drivers to significant pressure drops in one or more tires, which can negatively impact vehicle handling, fuel economy, and tire longevity, and can even lead to dangerous blowouts.

There are two main types of TPMS: direct and indirect. Direct TPMS systems utilize pressure sensors located inside each tire, often mounted on the valve stem. These sensors continuously measure the air pressure and transmit the data wirelessly to the vehicle's central computer. If the pressure in any tire falls below a safe threshold, a warning light is illuminated on the dashboard. Indirect TPMS, on the other hand, does not use dedicated pressure sensors. Instead, it infers tire pressure by monitoring the wheel speed sensors, which are already part of the vehicle's anti-lock braking system (ABS). If a tire is underinflated, it will rotate at a slightly different speed than the other tires, and the system will detect this discrepancy and trigger a warning.

The implementation of TPMS has become increasingly common due to safety regulations in many countries, mandating its inclusion in new vehicles. This technology contributes to road safety by helping drivers maintain optimal tire pressure, which is crucial for safe driving, especially in adverse conditions. It also promotes fuel efficiency, as properly inflated tires reduce rolling resistance.
