Dualphase, or dual-phase, is a term used in materials science to describe a system comprising two distinct phases that coexist in a single material and interact to give properties not present in a single phase. In practice, dual-phase materials often feature a soft, ductile matrix with a dispersed hard phase, such as ferrite containing martensite islands in steels, or a second phase embedded in a different matrix.

Dual-phase steels are the most common example. They consist of a relatively soft ferrite matrix with islands of hard martensite produced by partial transformation of austenite during controlled heat treatment. The hard phase boosts strength and hardness, while the soft phase maintains formability and toughness. This combination yields high strength-to-weight ratios useful for structural components.

Manufacturing typically involves intercritical annealing of cold-rolled steel to create a ferrite–austenite mixture, followed by rapid quenching or controlled cooling to transform retained austenite into martensite and to stabilize the microstructure. The size, distribution, and volume fraction of martensite islands largely determine mechanical properties such as strength, ductility, and energy absorption.

Applications are common in the automotive industry for crash-relevant parts, as well as in other sectors requiring high strength and ductility. Dual-phase steels are often marketed by designations such as DP600, DP800, or DP980, which reference approximate tensile strengths in MPa.

Beyond steels, the term dual-phase also appears in metal-matrix composites, ceramics, and other systems that combine a continuous phase with a secondary phase to tailor properties. See also duplex stainless steel and two-phase flow.
