drapière

Drapière is a term used in French to denote a person or establishment that deals in fabrics and textiles, especially those used for drapery, upholstery, and clothing. A drapier (masculine) or drapière (feminine) could be a cloth merchant who buys, sells, and sometimes arranges fabrics in a shop. In historical contexts, drapiers formed an important part of urban economies, supplying cloth to tailors, workshops, and households. Some draperies also provided additional goods such as notions, haberdashery, and linings.

Etymology: from Old French drapier, from drap meaning cloth; the feminine form follows standard noun gendering in French. The English equivalent is draper, or draper’s shop, with similar origins.

Modern usage: In contemporary French usage, the specific term drapière is less common; many shops that sell fabrics are simply described as magasins de tissus or merceries. The word draperie can also refer to the goods sold (cloths and fabrics) or, in the sense of home furnishings, to curtains and drapery. When used in branding or historical texts, drapier or drapière may appear as job titles or shop names.
