Dragochsläpp is a term of Swedish origin that describes the phenomenon of dragonflies emerging from their aquatic nymph stage. The word is a compound of "drago" (dragonfly) and "chsläpp" (release or letting go). This natural event marks a significant transition in the dragonfly's life cycle, moving from an underwater existence to a terrestrial and aerial one.

The process of dragochsläpp typically occurs during warmer months, often in late spring and summer, when water temperatures are suitable for the nymph's final development. Dragonfly nymphs, also known as naiads, live in freshwater environments like ponds, lakes, and slow-moving streams. They spend their time hunting and growing underwater, shedding their exoskeletons multiple times as they increase in size.

When a nymph is ready to metamorphose, it crawls out of the water onto a plant stem, rock, or other emergent surface. Here, the nymph's exoskeleton splits open, and the adult dragonfly slowly emerges. This emerging adult is initially soft and pale, with folded wings. It must then pump hemolymph into its wings and body to expand and harden them before it can fly. This vulnerable period is crucial, as the newly emerged dragonfly is susceptible to predators. Once its wings are dry and hardened, the adult dragonfly takes flight, commencing its aerial life where it will hunt for insects and eventually reproduce. Dragochsläpp is a visible sign of a healthy aquatic ecosystem, indicating the presence of suitable breeding grounds for dragonflies.
