Doubleweave, also written double weave, is a weave structure in which two layers of fabric are woven on the same loom simultaneously. The two layers form a single fabric with two faces, often differing in color or pattern. Depending on the design, the layers may be interlaced to create a reversible material or may remain largely independent and be separated after weaving. Doubleweave can produce fabrics with substantial thickness and opacity, while still being relatively light in weight.

Construction typically requires a loom capable of handling two warps and two wefts, such as a multi-shaft loom, a dobby loom, or a loom equipped with a jacquard attachment. In a common arrangement, two warp systems are coordinated so that each pass weaves both layers in tandem. The interlacing pattern causes the two layers to be bonded at regular intervals, resulting in a fabric that behaves as a single unit while showing different faces on each side. Variants include interlock double weave, where the layers share interlacements to increase durability and thickness.

Characteristics of doubleweave include reversibility, combined with the potential for distinct sides, and the ability to incorporate complex color and pattern designs in one fabric. The technique enables fabrics suitable for outerwear, blankets, upholstery, and decorative textiles, offering visual interest and added warmth. While the basic concept remains consistent, exact structures and terminology can vary among weaving communities and historical traditions.
