The term is not widely standardized and may be applied in different ways across fields such as product design, architecture, urban planning, and packaging. In many contexts, doubleuse aligns with principles of the circular economy, modular design, and rapid reconfiguration.

Examples include multifunctional furniture that can convert between seating and storage; packaging that can be repurposed as storage containers or planters; and architectural spaces that can be reconfigured to support different activities without major reconstruction.
