doorstreek
Doorstreek is a Dutch term used in typography and proofreading to refer to a line drawn through text to indicate deletion or correction. The line itself is called a doorstreek, and the verb describing the action is doorstrepen (to strike through). The practice originated in manuscript editing and has been carried into modern editing and typesetting, where a word or phrase is crossed out to show that it should be ignored or replaced, while the surrounding text remains legible. In publishing, a doorstreek signals that the material is no longer valid or should be reconsidered, rather than simply emphasized. In digital typography, a strikethrough effect is commonly rendered using the HTML tag <s> or the CSS property text-decoration: line-through. Etymology: The word combines door- (through) with streek (line, stripe). Variants and related terms include doorhalen, doorstrepen, and the English equivalent strikethrough.
