Donorområdet refers to the area of the body from which hair follicles are harvested for hair transplantation. In the vast majority of cases, this area is the back or sides of the scalp. The hair in these regions is genetically resistant to the effects of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), the hormone responsible for male-pattern baldness. This characteristic makes the transplanted hair likely to continue growing in its new location.

The process of harvesting hair from the donor area typically involves one of two main techniques: Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) or Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE). FUT involves removing a strip of skin containing hair follicles, which is then dissected into individual follicular units. FUE, on the other hand, extracts individual follicular units directly from the donor area using a small punch tool.

The density and quality of hair in the donor area are crucial factors in determining the potential success and extent of a hair transplant. Surgeons carefully assess the donor area to ensure there is sufficient viable hair to achieve the desired aesthetic outcome without creating noticeable thinning in the harvested region. Scarring is a consideration for both techniques, with FUT generally leaving a linear scar and FUE resulting in numerous small, dot-like scars that are usually less conspicuous. Post-operative care of the donor area is important for healing and minimizing any discomfort.
