Djupmåttstår is a measuring instrument used to determine the depth of a space, hole, or sediment layer. In Swedish technical usage the term refers to a depth gauge stand or depth measuring rod. The instrument may be a simple graduated rod that is lowered into a borehole or trench until its bottom contact stops the device, or a rod connected to a base with a reading scale. Modern variants may include digital sensors and a locking mechanism to hold the measurement.

Design and operation: A typical djupmåttstår consists of a long, straight rod with a calibrated scale along its length. A contact tip or plunger at the lower end allows the rod to register when it reaches the bottom. The rod is lowered from a fixed height or from the surface with a line, and the reading is taken at the surface. In some configurations the rod is attached to a winch or supporting frame to facilitate repeated measurements.

Applications: It is used in civil engineering to measure trench or foundation depths, in geology and archaeology to determine sediment thickness, and in borehole logging to assess depth to bedrock or water tables. Variants may feature rugged handles, protective sheathing, or digital readouts.

Limitations: Accuracy depends on the operator, the stability of the setup, and obstructions at the bottom. The instrument provides a direct linear measurement and is often used alongside other site characterization methods.
