Divisionless is an adjective used in mathematics, computer science, and related fields to describe approaches that perform calculations without using division. It is especially relevant in performance-critical contexts where division is costly in cycles, power, or hardware area.

In computing, divisionless techniques replace division with cheaper operations such as addition, subtraction, bitwise shifts, multiplication by constants, or table lookups. Common strategies include using fixed-point reciprocals: compute x/d by multiplying x by a precomputed approximation of 1/d and then applying a small correction, or employing iterative methods (for example, Newton-Raphson) with a few iterations to refine the result. Another approach is to transform the problem to a form accessible by shifts or by multiplying by a reciprocal modulo a fixed base, as in Montgomery or Barrett reduction for modular arithmetic. When d is a constant known at compile time, compilers often generate divisionless code by replacing the division with a sequence of multiplications and shifts.

Applications include real-time graphics, digital signal processing, and embedded systems where speed and energy efficiency matter. Divisionless methods are also studied in numerical analysis and number theory to avoid divisions that might be costly or unavailable in certain arithmetic settings, such as fixed-point or integer-only computations.

Limitations include the trade-off between speed and accuracy, the need for careful error estimation, and potential overflow or reduced precision. Divisionless algorithms can be more complex to implement and maintain than their division-based counterparts, and their benefits depend on the target hardware and compiler optimizations.
