Disszociáció is a psychological term referring to a disconnection between thoughts, memories, feelings, actions, or sense of identity. It is a defense mechanism that the mind uses to cope with overwhelming stress or trauma. During a dissociative episode, a person may feel detached from themselves, their surroundings, or their experiences.

There are various forms of dissociáció. Dissociative amnesia involves gaps in memory, often related to traumatic events. Depersonalization is a feeling of being detached from one's own body or mental processes, as if observing oneself from outside. Derealization is a sense of unreality or detachment from one's surroundings. Dissociative identity disorder, formerly known as multiple personality disorder, is characterized by the presence of two or more distinct personality states.

Dissociáció can be triggered by various factors, including severe psychological trauma, abuse, accidents, or natural disasters. It is also sometimes associated with certain mental health conditions like PTSD, anxiety disorders, and borderline personality disorder. While mild dissociative experiences, like daydreaming, are common, more severe forms can significantly impact a person's daily functioning.

Diagnosis of dissociative disorders typically involves a thorough psychological evaluation. Treatment often includes psychotherapy, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy or dialectical behavior therapy, aimed at helping individuals process trauma, develop coping mechanisms, and integrate fragmented aspects of their identity. In some cases, medication may be used to manage co-occurring symptoms like anxiety or depression.
