Disparaging is an adjective describing language or behavior that belittles, devalues, or expresses a low opinion of a person, group, organization, idea, or thing. Disparaging remarks undermine the subject's reputation or worth, often by presenting contemptuous, dismissive, or derogatory judgments. The term commonly appears in discussions of rhetoric, media reporting, workplace communication, and legal contexts. The opposite concept is respectful or neutral discourse.

Disparaging language may be explicit, such as negative statements or insinuations, or subtler through tone and implication, including stereotypes. It can be intentional or unintentional, and its perceived impact depends on context, audience, and power dynamics. In professional settings, disparaging remarks can affect morale and inclusion and may violate workplace policies or anti-harassment guidelines. In media and advertising, disparagement can raise issues of credibility and, in some jurisdictions, trigger legal claims such as trade disparagement or product disparagement if false statements harm a competitor’s goods or business.

Non-disparagement clauses in contracts prohibit individuals from making disparaging comments about employers or partners. Ethically, many scholars advocate avoiding disparagement in favor of factual, respectful critique, especially when discussing sensitive topics or vulnerable groups.
