Diskurssisanat, in Finnish linguistics, refers to a broad class of discourse-related items whose primary function is to organize conversation and express the speaker’s stance rather than to convey new factual content. They are usually small units—particles, adverbs, or minor pronouns—that occur at clause boundaries or within clauses and attach to discourse rather than to the propositional content.

Their functions include signaling stance and attitude (hedging, emphasis, evaluation), managing turn-taking and topic progression (introducing a topic, signaling a shift, returning to a prior point), and helping coherence by linking sentences or segments. They often carry pragmatic meaning, such as politeness, solidarity, or alignment with the interlocutor, and they interact with prosody and timing to shape how utterances are understood.

In research, diskurssisanat are studied within pragmatics and discourse analysis, with attention to their distribution across registers, speakers, and ages. They are often analyzed as pragmatic particles or discourse markers and may be difficult to classify strictly as traditional parts of speech. Corpus studies and experimental methods examine frequency, position, and prosodic realization, as well as cross-linguistic comparisons with discourse markers in other languages.

The study of diskurssisanat contributes to understanding how Finnish speakers regulate conversation, shape social relations, and achieve coherence in speech. They are less prominent in formal writing and become more central in spontaneous speech and conversational genres.
