In signal processing and systems theory, diskreettiaikainen signaali refers to a sequence x[n] indexed by integers, representing samples taken at regular time steps.

In practice, sampling a continuous-time signal with period T yields a diskreettiaikainen signaali x[n] = x(nT). Diskreettiaikaiset järjestelmät can be described by difference equations and impulse responses h[n], and their output is obtained by convolution y[n] = x[n] * h[n]. For analysis, the discrete-time Fourier transform (DTFT) and the Z-transform are standard tools, enabling frequency-domain insight for discrete-time signals.
