Direita is a Portuguese term with several related meanings. It can refer to the right-hand side or direction, opposite of esquerda (left). In political discourse, direita denotes the right wing of the political spectrum—a group of ideologies, parties, and movements generally characterized by a preference for traditional social order, market-oriented economic policies, and a cautious or skeptical attitude toward rapid social change. The concept first emerged in 18th- to 19th-century Europe, with the arrangement of delegates in assemblies after the French Revolution: supporters of the king or traditional order sat on the right; reformists sat on the left.
