Direhorses are a fictional species of large, predatory equines featured in the fantasy novel series *The Lord of the Rings* by J.R.R. Tolkien. These creatures are distinct from the horses of the West and are primarily associated with the dark lord Sauron and his servants, the Ringwraiths.

Physically, direhorses are described as being larger and more powerful than ordinary horses. They possess a formidable presence, often depicted as black or dark in color, with a wild and untamed nature. Their eyes are sometimes described as burning with malevolence. They are known for their incredible speed, stamina, and ferocity, making them formidable mounts in battle.

Direhorses are not naturally occurring creatures; rather, they are believed to have been bred or corrupted by Sauron. Their origins are somewhat mysterious, but they are implied to be unnatural beasts, imbued with dark magic. They are the preferred mounts of the Nazgûl, the nine Ringwraiths, and their ability to traverse difficult terrain and instill terror is a significant advantage to Sauron's forces.
