Advances in catalyst design, including the use of heterogeneous metal catalysts and organocatalysts, have improved the selectivity and yield of many diol synthesis routes. Because of their versatile reactivity, diols serve as key intermediates in the manufacturing of polymers such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polycarbonates, and elastomers, as well as in the synthesis of fine chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and specialty solvents.

Regulatory agencies monitor diol production and usage to ensure compliance with environmental and health standards, given that some diols can exhibit toxicity or pose environmental risks when improperly handled. As the demand for sustainable and bio-based chemicals grows, research continues to explore renewable feedstocks and greener production methods for a wide range of diol products.
