A diodiyksikkö, often translated as a diode unit or diode module, is a semiconductor device that allows electric current to flow in only one direction. It is constructed from a p-n junction, where a p-type semiconductor material (with an excess of holes) is joined with an n-type semiconductor material (with an excess of electrons). This junction creates a depletion region where charge carriers are scarce, and an electric field that opposes current flow in one direction.

When a positive voltage is applied to the p-type side (anode) and a negative voltage to the n-type side (cathode), the device is forward-biased. This causes the depletion region to narrow, and current can flow through the diodiyksikkö. Conversely, when the polarity of the applied voltage is reversed, the device is reverse-biased. This widens the depletion region, and very little current can flow, effectively blocking the flow of electricity.

Diodiyksiköt are fundamental components in electronics and have a wide range of applications. They are commonly used in rectification, converting alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC), which is essential for powering most electronic devices.
