Diodiyksiköt

Diodiyksiköt, often referred to as diodes, are fundamental semiconductor electronic components. They are two-terminal electronic devices that conduct current primarily in one direction. This unidirectional current flow is achieved through the internal structure of the diode, which typically consists of a p-n junction. A p-n junction is formed by joining a p-type semiconductor material (which has an excess of holes, or positive charge carriers) with an n-type semiconductor material (which has an excess of electrons, or negative charge carriers).

When a voltage is applied across the diode in the forward direction, meaning the positive terminal is connected to the p-type material and the negative terminal to the n-type material, the diode allows current to flow. This is because the applied voltage overcomes the built-in potential barrier at the junction, enabling the movement of charge carriers. Conversely, when the voltage is applied in the reverse direction, with the positive terminal connected to the n-type material and the negative terminal to the p-type material, the diode blocks the flow of current. In this case, the applied voltage widens the depletion region at the junction, increasing the resistance and preventing significant current passage.

Diodes have a wide range of applications in electronics. They are commonly used for rectification, converting alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC). They also serve as switches, voltage regulators, signal modulators, and in light-emitting diodes (LEDs) which produce light when current flows through them. Different types of diodes exist, each optimized for specific functions, such as Zener diodes for voltage regulation, Schottky diodes for high-speed switching, and photodiodes for light detection.
