Dikebuilding refers to the construction and maintenance of dikes, embankments designed to prevent flooding by keeping water from encroaching on land. Dikes are typically built along coastlines, river deltas, and floodplains where water levels can rise during storms or high rainfall. The goal is to provide a stable barrier with sufficient crest height and freeboard to withstand occasional overtopping and storm surge while allowing drainage behind the dike.

Dike engineering involves choosing suitable materials and cross-sections. Earthen dikes often consist of a core impermeable layer (such as clay) with outer shells of compacted earth or stone, while reinforced dikes may use concrete or rock-fill. Slopes and toe stability, seepage control, drainage systems, and foundation conditions are assessed through geotechnical analysis. In some settings sheet piles, cut-off walls, or geosynthetics are used to increase water tightness and stability.

Construction methods vary by site. Earth dikes are built by layering and compacting material, while coastal works may combine rock armor with an inner earth core. Maintenance is ongoing and includes regular inspections, repair after storm events, dredging, and, if needed, raising the crest or widening the structure.

Historically, large-scale dike systems have enabled land reclamation and protection in delta regions and are central to flood risk management in many countries. Modern practice emphasizes risk assessment, monitoring, and adaptability to climate change, balancing safety with environmental and social considerations.
