Dictatorship is a form of government in which supreme authority rests with a single leader or a small group that is not constrained by a constitution or by the rule of law. In such regimes, political pluralism is limited or eliminated, and decisions are made with little or no deliberation or accountability to the public.

Dictatorships typically centralize power in executive authority, suppress opposition, and curtail civil liberties. They rely on coercive institutions such as security services, censorship, and propaganda to maintain control. Legal developments may be arbitrary, and courts and legislatures serve to legitimize decisions rather than to check power. Elections, if held, are often controlled or manipulated to ensure the incumbent's retention.

There are several forms of dictatorship. Personalist regimes center authority on a single leader; military dictatorships are led by officers or juntas; one-party states concentrate political power within a single party that dominates all aspects of life. Hybrid or transitional regimes may present elections or formal offices while retaining authoritarian control.

The impact of dictatorship varies but commonly includes restricted political rights, limited media freedom, suppressed dissent, and potential human rights abuses. Economic performance can be uneven and prone to corruption, selective patronage, and inefficiency, though some regimes pursue modernization or stabilization goals. Internationally, dictatorial states may seek legitimacy through nationalism, regional influence, or alliances.

Dictatorships are often challenged by internal opposition, external pressure, or economic crises, and may end through reform, collapse, military defeat, or external intervention. Transitions may lead to democratisation, authoritarian persistence, or new forms of rule. Understanding dictatorships involves examining power dynamics, legitimacy, institutions, and the balance between coercion and consent.
