Device cameras are image-capture systems built into or attached to electronic devices to record still photographs and video. They range from integrated smartphone and laptop webcams to external action cameras, dash cams, drone payloads, and security or surveillance cameras. Many devices employ multiple cameras with different focal lengths to provide wide, ultra-wide, and telephoto perspectives, enabling versatile photography and videography in a compact form factor.

Key components include an image sensor (commonly CMOS, with some older or specialized systems using CCD), a lens assembly, and an image signal processor that converts raw sensor data into viewable images. Modern devices also feature autofocus or laser/phase-detection focus systems, optical or electronic image stabilization, and, in higher-end models, depth sensors or LiDAR for depth estimation. Exposure control, color science, and noise reduction are handled by the device’s processing pipeline, often using computational photography techniques that combine multiple frames to improve detail and dynamic range.

Common formats and storage practices vary by device. Still images are typically stored as JPEG or HEIF, with RAW formats available on some smartphones and cameras for advanced editing. Video is usually captured in MP4 or MOV containers with codecs such as H.264 or HEVC. Interfaces for data transfer include internal buses like MIPI CSI-2 for sensors, and external connections such as USB-C or Wi-Fi for streaming, conferencing, or file transfer.

Applications span consumer photography, video conferencing, content creation, automotive and industrial monitoring, and security systems. Privacy and security considerations—prompting permissions, indicator LEDs, and the ability to disable cameras—are increasingly emphasized in device design and policy.
