Designspecificering, or design specification, is the documented set of design requirements and constraints that describe the intended product or system. It serves as a contractual and technical reference for stakeholders, including customers, engineers, suppliers, and regulators, and bridges user needs with the eventual design.

Its main purpose is to define what must be built, how the system is expected to perform, and under what conditions it must operate. It enables verification and validation, supports procurement and production planning, and provides traceability from requirements to implementation and testing.

A designspecificering typically includes scope, objectives, performance criteria, interfaces, materials and workmanship, safety and regulatory requirements, reliability targets, environmental conditions, constraints, and acceptance criteria. It may distinguish functional specifications (what the product should do) from technical specifications (how it should be realized).

The development process is iterative. Stakeholders gather needs, decompose them into measurable requirements, draft the specification, and review for completeness and ambiguity. Baselines and change control ensure traceability across design, manufacturing, and testing. Verification plans map each requirement to corresponding tests or analyses.

Designspecificering interacts with related documents, such as requirements specifications, design descriptions, test plans, and risk assessments. It is often aligned with standards and sector guides (for example ISO, IEC, or industry-specific norms) to support compliance, quality assurance, and supplier collaboration.
