Derechten is a Dutch term referring to entitlements or legal rights. In standard Dutch, the plural is rightsen? No—the correct plural is rechten. The form “derechten” is uncommon and may appear only in certain spellings, older texts, or typographical variants. The concept itself is closely related to the English “right” and the German “Recht,” sharing a common sense of what is due or permitted to individuals or groups.

Rights can be civil and political, social and economic, or procedural. Civil and political rights protect personal freedoms and participation in public life, such as freedom of expression, assembly, and due process. Social and economic rights concern access to essential services and opportunities, including education, housing, and work. Property rights govern ownership and the use of resources. Enforcement mechanisms include courts, ombudsman offices, and administrative bodies that monitor compliance, provide remedies, and ensure accountability. In practice, derechos continually adapt to new challenges, including digital privacy, data protection, and algorithmic transparency.
