Deratization is the process of reducing or eliminating populations of rodents, typically rats and mice, in a defined area to protect public health, food safety, and property. It encompasses assessment, sanitation, exclusion, and measures to suppress rodent activity. Deratization programs are used in urban neighborhoods, farms, food processing facilities, and transportation infrastructure.

Control methods fall into several categories. Chemical control uses rodenticides, including anticoagulants and non-anticoagulant compounds, applied in bait stations or tamper-resistant devices. Trapping uses snap traps, electronic traps, or live traps. Exclusion and sanitation aim to remove attractants and seal entry points, reduce harborage, and manage waste. Biological control is limited and not a primary method in most settings.

Integrated pest management combines sanitation, exclusion, monitoring, and population suppression, often coordinated by trained professionals. IPM emphasizes the least-risk, proven methods and monitoring results to guide adjustments. Timing, local regulations, and building-specific factors influence method choice.

Safety and regulation: Many jurisdictions require licensed professionals to perform deratization, particularly when using restricted rodenticides. There are hazards to non-target animals, children, and ecosystems; proper bait placement, disposal of carcasses, and adherence to label instructions are essential. Public health authorities may set standards for reporting and monitoring outcomes.

Effectiveness and limitations: Deratization reduces rodent populations and disease vectors but rarely achieves complete eradication; infestations can reoccur from nearby populations or new entry points. Ongoing maintenance, inspection, and community cooperation are typically necessary for long-term control.
