Depressives is an informal, nonclinical term that may describe people who experience depressive symptoms or depressive disorders. It is not a formal diagnosis, and many prefer the phrasing “people with depression” or “individuals with depressive disorders.” The concept covers a range of conditions characterized by persistent low mood and reduced interest or pleasure, which can affect thoughts, behavior, and physical health.

Depressive disorders include major depressive disorder, persistent depressive disorder (dysthymia), postpartum depression, and other related conditions. Global data indicate hundreds of millions are affected at any given time; estimates often cite about 5-7% of adults experiencing a major depressive episode in a year, with higher lifetime risk. Depression occurs across ages and cultures, though prevalence is higher in women in many regions. Risk factors include genetics, biochemical factors, adverse life events, chronic illness, and social isolation. Comorbidity with anxiety disorders, substance use, and other mental health conditions is common.

Symptoms commonly include a depressed mood or a loss of interest or pleasure, along with changes in appetite or sleep, fatigue, feelings of worthlessness or guilt, difficulties concentrating, and possible thoughts of death or suicide. Diagnosis rests on clinical evaluation, symptom duration and severity, and exclusion of medical causes. Assessment tools such as the PHQ‑9 and structured interviews aid evaluation.

Treatment is typically multimodal. Evidence supports psychotherapy (for example, cognitive behavioral therapy or interpersonal therapy), pharmacotherapy (such as antidepressants like SSRIs or SNRIs), or their combination. In severe or treatment‑resistant cases, options like electroconvulsive therapy or other brain stimulation approaches may be used. Recovery trajectories vary; many people improve with treatment, though some experience recurrent episodes. Reducing stigma and improving access to care are ongoing public health priorities.
