Deplastering is the process of removing plaster from a surface. Common tools used for deplastering include plaster knives, chisels, hammers, and scrapers. For larger areas, specialized power tools such as rotary hammers or angle grinders may be employed, though these require greater care to avoid damaging the underlying structure. Safety precautions are essential, as plaster dust can be harmful if inhaled, and falling debris poses a risk. Wearing protective eyewear, gloves, and a dust mask is recommended.

The underlying material beneath the plaster, such as brick, lath, or drywall, will influence the technique. Plaster applied over wooden lath may require a more delicate approach to avoid dislodging the lath itself. Conversely, plaster on a solid substrate like brick might be removed more aggressively. Once the plaster is removed, the substrate is typically cleaned and prepared before new finishes are applied. This preparation might involve repairing any damage to the substrate or applying a new bonding agent.
