Denunciation is the act of publicly or formally declaring that someone has committed wrongdoing, or of reporting such wrongdoing to an authority. It can take the form of a formal complaint to police, a court, or an administrative body, or a public accusation intended to influence opinion or trigger sanctions. Denunciation is often aimed at securing accountability or protection for victims, but raises questions about evidence, intent, and due process.

Etymology and history: The term derives from Latin denuntiare, meaning to announce, warn, or declare. In many legal and political cultures, denunciations have functioned as a mechanism to uncover crime or wrongdoing. In certain regimes, denunciation became a pervasive instrument of surveillance and control, used to discipline rivals or dissenters as well as to police ordinary behavior.
