Democratisation refers to the process of transitioning from a non-democratic or authoritarian political system to a democratic one, characterized by free and fair elections, the protection of civil liberties, and the rule of law. The term is often used to describe both historical shifts in governance and ongoing efforts to establish or strengthen democratic institutions in various countries.

The concept of democratisation gained prominence in the late 20th century, particularly following the fall of communist regimes in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union in the 1990s. Scholars and policymakers began examining the conditions that facilitate democratic transitions, such as economic development, societal pressure for change, and international support. Key theories, like Samuel Huntington’s "third wave of democratisation," highlight periods of rapid democratic expansion, often driven by mass movements demanding political freedom.

Democratisation is not always linear or successful. Challenges include backsliding, where newly democratic states revert to authoritarianism, as well as corruption, weak institutions, and external interference. International organisations, such as the United Nations and the European Union, frequently provide technical assistance and financial support to promote democratic governance. However, democratisation is ultimately a domestic effort, dependent on local political will and societal engagement.

Critics argue that democratisation can be selective, with elites maintaining power while formal democratic structures exist. Others highlight the need for economic and social equality alongside political freedoms to ensure sustainable democratic governance. Despite these complexities, democratisation remains a central goal for many nations seeking to establish fair, inclusive, and accountable systems of rule.
