Delsystemet, directly translated as "the subsystem," is a Swedish term used to describe a part of a larger system that has its own structure, rules and dynamics but remains integrated within the whole. It is a common concept in fields such as engineering, systems theory, organizational studies and information technology to analyze how complex systems are organized.

A subsystem is bounded by defined interfaces to other parts of the system and often exhibits a degree of autonomy. It has its own goals or performance criteria, inputs and outputs, and may contain subsystems of its own. The behavior of a subsystem is influenced by, and in turn influences, the surrounding system through feedback, feedforward and boundary conditions. Subsystems can be tightly coupled or loosely coupled, and their design affects the resilience and efficiency of the entire system.

Examples include: in a company, the production, logistics and finance departments form subsystems of the corporate system; in computing, a database subsystem or graphics subsystem operates within a larger software architecture; in biology, organs and physiological networks function as subsystems of the organism.

From an analytical perspective, Delsystemet is studied through decomposition, interface specification, and modeling of interactions. System thinking emphasizes that the properties of the whole emerge from, but are not reducible to, the characteristics of its subsystems. Properly designed subsystems support modularity, scalability and maintainability.
