In Indonesian and Malay, dekor is widely used to denote interior decoration and styling, but the concept also appears in Turkish, Polish, and other European languages with similar meanings. While “decor” in English often emphasizes the appearance of a space, “dekor” in non-English contexts may also reference the broader practice of arranging objects to support function or mood.

Applications span interior design, event styling, stage and film scenery, and retail displays. In homes, dekor focuses on color harmony, furniture scale, lighting, and textiles. At events, it includes backdrops, florals, and lighting to shape ambiance. In theatres and productions, scenography or décor establishes locale and period, while in museums and exhibitions, display styling aids interpretation.

Design considerations include stylistic coherence, cultural preferences, and sustainability, with growing attention to durable materials and responsible sourcing. The rise of digital and virtual environments has expanded the idea of dekor to include 3D renders, virtual staging, and augmented realities used in marketing, gaming, and immersive experiences.
