Defensemen are players in ice hockey whose primary duty is to prevent the opposing team from scoring and to support the goaltender. Teams typically ice two defensemen at a time, who operate on the left and right sides of the ice and spend most of their shifts in the defensive zone, while also contributing to transitions and offense from the blue line.

Defensive responsibilities include protecting the goal, blocking shots, breaking up passes, and clearing the puck from the defensive zone. Defensemen maintain gap control against opposing forwards, provide support on forechecks, and are often relied upon to kill penalties. In many teams, one or both defensemen also quarterback the power play, directing plays from the point and keeping the puck in the attacking zone.

There are different styles of defenseman. Stay-at-home defensemen prioritize defense and physical coverage, while offensive-minded defensemen (two-way or point-oriented) contribute to offense with strong skating, passing, and long-range shooting. Modern systems emphasize puck management, transition play, and quick breakout passes to initiate counterattacks.

Skills and training for defensemen focus on skating and edge control, body positioning, situational awareness, and decision-making under pressure. Proficient defensemen combine defensive acumen with reliable puck handling and the ability to read plays to create or prevent scoring opportunities.
