These platforms rely on robust pressure hulls, life-support systems for crewed missions, ballast and trim mechanisms, and powerful thrusters for maneuvering. Communication and navigation are adapted for extreme depths, and power and thermal management are critical considerations. Depth capabilities vary from several thousand meters for many scientific and industrial missions to nearly ten thousand meters for the deepest manned expeditions.
