Submersibles are small underwater vehicles designed to operate beneath the surface. They may be crewed or uncrewed and are used for exploration, science, and engineering tasks in the ocean and other aquatic environments. The term distinguishes them from larger submarines, which are designed for sustained, independent operation and crewed long-duration missions.

Most submersibles fall into two broad categories: crewed submersibles and unmanned submersibles. Unmanned vehicles include remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) and autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). Manned submersibles carry a pilot or crew and may include manipulators or sampling equipment for scientific or industrial work.

Construction and operation: Submersibles typically have a pressure hull to withstand external water pressure and life-support systems for crewed vehicles. They use ballast or buoyancy control to dive and surface, and are propelled by electric thrusters and, in some designs, by hydraulic or mechanical systems. Power may come from onboard batteries or from a surface support ship via a tether.

Capabilities and limitations: Depth ratings vary; dive duration is constrained by life support, power, and thermal management. Safety features and redundancies are central to design. Submersibles can collect samples, deploy sensors, manipulate objects, and capture video and data.

Applications: They are used in oceanography, marine biology, underwater archaeology, hydrocarbon and renewable energy inspections, salvage, and documentary filmmaking.

Notable examples: Alvin, Trieste, and James Cameron’s Deepsea Challenger are among the best-known manned submersibles. These vehicles have enabled direct human observation of deep-sea environments that are otherwise inaccessible.
