Dedoorbloeding, commonly referred to as a nosebleed in English, is the spontaneous or intentional bleeding from the blood vessels inside the nose. It is a relatively common medical condition that can occur in people of all ages, though it is more frequent in children and older adults. The bleeding typically originates from the anterior (front) part of the nasal septum, the wall dividing the two nostrils, where small blood vessels are located close to the surface.

Several factors can contribute to dedoorbloeding, including dry air, nasal trauma, frequent nose-blowing, or picking the nose. Other causes may involve infections like the common cold or allergies, which can irritate the nasal passages. Medical conditions such as high blood pressure, bleeding disorders, or nasal tumors can also lead to recurrent nosebleeds. Environmental factors, such as extreme temperatures or altitude changes, may play a role as well.

Most nosebleeds are mild and can be managed at home. Immediate steps to control the bleeding include sitting upright, leaning slightly forward to prevent blood from draining down the throat, and pinching the soft part of the nose just below the bony bridge for about 10–15 minutes without releasing. Applying a cold compress to the nose or bridge of the nose may help constrict blood vessels and reduce bleeding. Avoiding nose-blowing, spicy foods, and strenuous activity for at least 24 hours after the bleeding stops is also recommended.

Severe or frequent nosebleeds that do not respond to home treatment, or those accompanied by other symptoms such as dizziness, confusion, or difficulty breathing, should prompt a visit to a healthcare provider. A doctor may investigate underlying causes, such as structural abnormalities or clotting disorders, and may prescribe treatments like nasal sprays, cauterization, or other medical interventions if necessary. Prevention strategies include keeping the nasal passages moist with saline sprays, avoiding nose-picking, and maintaining good overall health.
