In warfare and intelligence, deception aims to confuse opponents and protect assets through strategies like feints and decoys.

Legal and ethical considerations vary by jurisdiction but typically place limits on deception. Fraud, misrepresentation, and false advertising are prosecutable in many systems. Ethically, debates center on whether deception can be justified for harm prevention, privacy protection, or strategic purposes in competitive environments.

Psychology and detection: Humans are often poor at reliably detecting deception; there is no single behavioral cue that guarantees deceit. Cognitive load, situational context, and prior relationships influence judgments. Researchers study cues, lie-truth discrepancies, and trained lie detectors, while acknowledging that accuracy remains imperfect.

In culture and media, deception features as a motif and as a tool in magic and illusion, where audiences are aware of the artifice. Narrative deception can drive plots or reveal character, while critical media literacy seeks to reduce gullibility by encouraging verification.
