In digital electronics, deassertion refers to the transition of a control signal from its asserted (active) state to its deasserted (inactive) state. An assertion is a condition or signal that indicates a requested or active state; deassertion ends that condition and returns the signal to its normal idle level.

Signals used in deassertion may be active-high or active-low, meaning that a high level asserts the condition or a low level does. Designs distinguish between synchronous deassertion, driven by a clock, and asynchronous deassertion, which changes independently of the clock. The timing of deassertion, including edge, hold time, and minimum pulse width, affects circuit behavior and reliability.

Asynchronous deassertions can introduce glitches or metastability if not properly synchronized to the system clock. Therefore, release of resets or enables is frequently implemented with synchronizers or multi-stage flip-flop chains to ensure a clean, monotonic deassertion that aligns with the rest of the design.

Common uses include releasing reset signals after power-up, enabling clocks or power domains, and controlling submodules or handshakes in sequenced operations. Deassertion order is important in multi-block systems to avoid race conditions and to ensure safe startup and shutdown sequences.

In design and verification, practitioners specify deassertion properties and constraints to guarantee that deassertion occurs only under valid conditions and within defined time bounds. Testing and formal verification often check that deassertions do not create glitches or violate timing requirements.
