A computer, often referred to as a "datoare" in Romanian, is an electronic device that processes data according to a set of instructions, known as a program. It is a general-purpose machine that can be programmed to perform a wide range of tasks. The term "computer" is derived from the word "compute," which means to calculate.

The modern digital computer was invented in the 1940s, with the first electronic computer, ENIAC, being developed in 1945. Since then, computers have evolved significantly, becoming smaller, faster, and more powerful. They are now an integral part of our daily lives, used in a wide range of applications, from personal computing and communication to scientific research, business, and entertainment.

A computer typically consists of several components, including the central processing unit (CPU), which performs most of the processing inside the computer; the memory, which temporarily stores data and instructions; and the storage devices, which permanently store data. Input devices, such as keyboards and mice, allow users to interact with the computer, while output devices, such as monitors and printers, display or produce the results of the computer's processing.

Computers can be classified into several categories based on their size, power, and capabilities. Personal computers (PCs) are designed for individual use and are the most common type of computer. Larger computers, such as mainframe and supercomputers, are used for more complex and demanding tasks, such as scientific research and large-scale data processing. Embedded computers are specialized computers designed to perform specific tasks within a larger system, such as a car or a home appliance.

In recent years, the development of mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets, has further expanded the use of computers. These devices combine the functionality of a computer with the portability of a mobile phone, allowing users to access and process data on the go.
