It is distinct from a privacy policy, which explains how personal data is collected and used for external audiences; a datapolicy provides internal governance that may incorporate privacy obligations.

Key components commonly found in datapolicies include data classification and labeling, data quality standards, access control and authentication, data security measures (encryption, masking, backups), data lifecycle management (collection, storage, use, sharing, retention, deletion), data sharing and vendor risk management, metadata management and data catalogs, incident response, and auditing and compliance. Implementation typically involves formal documentation, executive sponsorship, defined ownership, training, and supporting technologies such as identity and access management, data loss prevention, encryption, monitoring, and data-management platforms.

Policies should be reviewed regularly and updated to reflect organizational changes and evolving legal obligations. Challenges include balancing governance with usability and ensuring enforcement across distributed data environments.
