Cynkowanie is the process of applying a protective zinc coating to steel or iron to prevent rusting. This electrochemical process, also known as galvanizing, offers several advantages for metal preservation. The most common method is hot-dip galvanizing, where steel or iron is immersed in a bath of molten zinc. This creates a metallurgical bond between the zinc and the base metal, forming a robust coating.

Zinc provides protection through two primary mechanisms. Firstly, it acts as a barrier, preventing corrosive elements from reaching the steel. Secondly, zinc is more electrochemically active than iron. This means that if the coating is scratched and the base metal is exposed, the zinc will preferentially corrode, sacrificing itself to protect the iron or steel. This is known as sacrificial protection.

Other methods of cynkowanie include electrogalvanizing, which uses an electric current to deposit a thin layer of zinc, and mechanical galvanizing, which involves tumbling parts in zinc powder and impacting them with glass beads. The choice of method often depends on the application, desired coating thickness, and cost considerations. Cynkowanie is widely used in construction, automotive manufacturing, and for everyday items like nails and fasteners due to its effectiveness and relatively low cost.
