Cyklustolerance is the ability of a system to withstand repeated cycles of changing conditions or stress without experiencing irreversible damage or unacceptable loss of performance. The term is used across disciplines, including materials science, biology, ecology, and agriculture, to describe robustness under cyclical load, fluctuating environments, or repeating stimuli. Cycles can differ in amplitude, frequency, duration, and cumulative effect; tolerance is judged by whether performance remains within predefined limits after many cycles and by the number of cycles the system can endure before failure or unacceptable decline occurs.

In materials testing, cyclic loading yields fatigue life metrics (Nf) and S-N curves. Fatigue failure occurs after crack initiation and propagation under repeated stress, even when peak stress is below the static strength. Cyklustolerance in this sense is enhanced by material composition, microstructure, grain boundaries, residual stresses, and surface condition; engineering aims to maximize cycles-to-failure and minimize crack growth rate through design, coatings, and heat treatment.

In biology and ecology, cyklustolerance describes how organisms endure diurnal, seasonal, or repetitive stressors such as temperature swings, hydration cycles, and light-dark patterns. Acclimation and adaptation contribute to increased tolerance. In agriculture and horticulture, plant varieties or crops with high cyklustolerance maintain growth and yield under persistent daily or seasonal cycles, aiding resilience to climate variability.

Assessment methods include fatigue testing, cyclic oxidative stress tests, circadian stability assays, or time-series analysis of physiological markers. The concept overlaps with resilience, robustness, and homeostasis and must be defined for each system, including acceptable performance thresholds and recovery dynamics.
