It is not a standardized technology or protocol, but a conceptual framework that appears in various design guides and academic discussions to emphasize circular processes and local resilience.

Core idea cycleä emphasizes continuous reuse and regeneration rather than linear take–make–dispose models. Principles commonly associated with cycleä include design for disassembly and repair, modular and scalable configurations, local production and sourcing, decarbonization of energy inputs, and the use of data to monitor flows and optimize performance. The aim is to minimize waste and create resilient systems that can adapt to changing conditions.

Typical components and architectures under cycleä concepts may cover several interdependent subsystems: an energy subsystem based on renewables and storage; a water subsystem including rainwater harvesting, greywater treatment, and reuse; a nutrient loop that recovers and returns nutrients to agriculture or horticulture; a materials loop that facilitates sorting, recycling, and re-manufacturing; and a governance or digital infrastructure that enables monitoring, modeling, and governance. Projects often integrate buildings, districts, or industrial sites to create a unified loop.
