Curetaje is a medical procedure also known as curettage. It involves the scraping or scooping of tissue from a body cavity or surface using a surgical instrument called a curette. This instrument typically has a spoon-shaped tip. The primary purpose of a curetaje is to remove abnormal or diseased tissue.

In gynecology, curetaje is commonly performed for diagnostic purposes or to treat certain gynecological conditions. Diagnostic curetaje, often referred to as a D&C (dilation and curettage), involves scraping tissue from the lining of the uterus (endometrium). This tissue is then sent to a laboratory for examination to detect abnormalities such as uterine polyps, fibroids, or precancerous or cancerous cells. Therapeutic curetaje may be used to remove retained products of conception after a miscarriage or abortion, or to treat heavy or abnormal uterine bleeding.

Beyond gynecology, curetaje can be employed in other medical specialties. For instance, in dentistry, it is used to clean out the infected tissue within a tooth socket or periodontal pocket during the treatment of gum disease. In dermatology, it might be used to remove skin lesions or growths. The procedure is generally performed under local or general anesthesia, depending on the extent and location. Post-procedure care typically involves monitoring for bleeding and managing any discomfort.
