Cultureliturgical is a term used in religious studies to describe the mutual shaping of culture and liturgy. It refers to how liturgical rites, prayers, music, vestments, architecture, space, and ritual choreography express and transmit communal meanings, identities, and values, while at the same time being informed by local languages, aesthetics, social structures, and everyday practices. The approach treats liturgy as a culture-making activity rather than a purely universal or timeless set of procedures, and it treats culture as something that is enacted and renewed through liturgical life.

The scope of cultureliturgical study is broad. It includes the formation of ritual language, the adoption of local musical styles, the acquisition of symbolic dress, the design of sacred spaces, and the choreography of processions and sacraments. It also considers how communities negotiate translation, adaptation, and inculturation to make liturgy intelligible and meaningful in particular cultural contexts. Across traditions—Christian, Hindu, Buddhist, Jewish, and others—cultureliturgical analysis examines how local art, aesthetics, and social norms become woven into liturgical practice and how liturgy, in turn, influences community memory and identity.

Methodologies commonly employed include ethnography, historical and archival research, musicology, and semiotic analysis. Researchers may focus on postcolonial and diasporic communities, liturgical reforms, or contemporary innovations such as digital or multimedia worship. Debates in the field address balancing universality with locality, questions of authenticity and innovation, and concerns about cultural appropriation versus respectful inculturation.
