A cryostage is a component of a scientific instrument designed to hold a sample at extremely low temperatures. These stages are crucial in fields such as microscopy, spectroscopy, and materials science, where the behavior of substances at cryogenic temperatures needs to be investigated. The primary function of a cryostage is to provide a stable and controlled environment for a sample, often below 100 Kelvin, and sometimes as low as a few Kelvin.

Cryostages typically employ cryocoolers, which are refrigeration systems capable of reaching and maintaining these very low temperatures. Common types of cryocoolers used in conjunction with cryostages include Gifford-McMahon (GM) cryocoolers and pulse tube cryocoolers. The sample is mounted on a specialized holder within the cryostage, which is then connected to the cryocooler. Thermal transfer is managed through various methods, often involving conductive materials and vacuum insulation to minimize heat ingress.

The precise temperature control offered by a cryostage is essential for observing phenomena such as superconductivity, phase transitions, and low-temperature chemical reactions.
