A cryocooler is a compact refrigeration device designed to reach cryogenic temperatures, typically below 120 K, without the use of liquid cryogens. It operates as a closed-cycle system in which a working gas, usually helium, is compressed, cooled, expanded, and preheated through a series of heat exchangers and regenerator material. The result is the removal of heat from a cold stage and its transfer to a warm sink, enabling continuous operation for instruments in laboratories and spacecraft.

Principles and components: Most cryocoolers use a regenerator bed, a compressor, and a cold head. The design may employ a piston or displacer (Stirling), or oscillating gas flow in sealed lines (pulse-tube). In Brayton-cycle units, gas is compressed at ambient temperature, cooled, and expanded through a turbine or valve to produce cooling. Some devices use Joule-Thomson expansion or two-stage configurations to reach lower temperatures.

Applications: Cryocoolers are widely used for cooling infrared and X-ray detectors, superconducting devices such as SQUIDs and superconducting magnets, and scientific instruments in space and terrestrial laboratories. Modern cryocoolers used in space are designed for low vibration and high reliability, often featuring long life and low maintenance. Cryogen-free MRI systems also employ cryocoolers to remove the need for liquid helium.

Performance: Operating temperatures typically range from about 4 K to around 120 K, depending on design. Cooling power can vary from a few milliwatts at 4 K to tens of watts at higher cryogenic temperatures. Key parameters include coefficient of performance, first- and second-stage temperatures, input power, and allowable vibration. Benefits include elimination of liquid cryogens and reduced risk of boil-off, at the cost of mechanical complexity and potential vibration.
