Crossdockpunt is a logistics concept describing a cross-docking point or facility where incoming shipments are received, sorted, and immediately transferred to outbound transportation with little or no storage. The goal is to reduce handling, shorten lead times, and limit inventory in transit or at rest.

In operation, goods arrive at inbound doors, are checked and deconsolidated if needed, sorted by destination or customer, and loaded onto outbound trailers or containers. Depending on the product and network, some staging may occur to combine shipments from multiple sources, but the principle remains to minimize dwelling time.

Types include pure cross-docking, where items flow directly through, and mixed cross-docking, which allows a temporary storage area for sorting or value-added services. Cross-docking can be single-node or part of a hub-and-spoke distribution network, often supported by IT systems that coordinate receiving, sorting, and loading.

Technology and layout: adjacent inbound and outbound docks, sortation conveyors, pallet shuttles, and warehouse management systems (WMS) linked to transportation management systems (TMS) for real-time visibility. Effective cross-docking relies on accurate demand forecasts, strict dock scheduling, and reliable transportation.

Benefits include lower handling costs, reduced inventory carrying costs, faster order fulfilment, improved service levels, and better freshness for perishable goods. Challenges include dependency on accurate planning, tight synchronization of inbound and outbound flows, potential underutilization of space, and sensitivity to disruptions.

Common metrics are dock-to-dock time, cross-dock percentage of total throughput, on-time outbound rate, and dock utilization. Cross-docking is widely used in retail, consumer electronics, automotive, and e-commerce to streamline supply chains.
