Courtesybased is a normative framework describing an approach to communication and interaction in which courtesy serves as the foundational principle guiding behavior, policy, and design. In a courtesybased paradigm, decisions and responses are evaluated for their impact on others’ autonomy, dignity, and comfort, with priority given to respectful and non-coercive engagement.

The term is used across disciplines such as etiquette theory, social psychology, user experience design, and human–computer interaction. It is typically contrasted with efficiency- or rule-based frameworks, and may be applied to both human-to-human and human-to-system interactions. The concept can be implemented as a set of guidelines, or embedded in algorithms and policies that prioritize politeness.

Key principles include acknowledging user needs, using nonviolent and inclusive language, offering options and opt-outs, apologizing when errors occur, and avoiding assumptions or pressure. In technology, courtesybased interfaces may include polite prompts, transparent explanations of limitations, and context-aware adjustments to tone and formality to suit the user and cultural setting.

Applications range from customer service and education to collaborative software and social platforms. Benefits cited include higher user trust and satisfaction, clearer communication, and reduced conflict. Criticisms focus on potential performative politeness, cultural bias, and added complexity in design and evaluation.
