Counterendorsement is a public reversal, repudiation, or replacement of an endorsement for a candidate, policy, or organization. It occurs when an individual or group who previously supported someone or something withdraws that support, or when another actor explicitly endorses an alternative position to counterbalance the original endorsement. The term can describe both revocation of prior backing and the issuance of an opposing endorsement aimed at diminishing the influence of the initial endorser.

Contexts and forms. Counterendorsement commonly appears in political campaigns, but can also arise in business, civic groups, or media where endorsements influence public perception.
