Corrosionproofing refers to the set of techniques and materials used to prevent or greatly reduce corrosion of metals and other susceptible materials in service. The aim is to extend component life, reduce maintenance, and lower life‑cycle costs in a wide range of environments.

A primary approach is material selection. Engineers may choose corrosion‑resistant alloys such as stainless steels or duplex steels, aluminum, certain polymers, or composites that are better suited to the environment. Protective barriers also play a central role: coatings and linings that form a physical separation between the metal and corrosive media. These include organic coatings (paints, epoxies, polyurethanes, powder coatings), metallic coatings (galvanizing with zinc or zinc alloys), and ceramic or polymer linings used in pipes, tanks, and offshore structures. Cathodic protection provides ongoing protection by making the metal a cathode, using sacrificial anodes or an impressed current system. Surface treatments like passivation of stainless steel or anodizing of aluminum can enhance inherent resistance.

Design and construction practices influence effectiveness. Avoiding crevices and water traps, ensuring proper drainage and ventilation, selecting compatible coating systems, and providing clean substrate preparation are essential. In service, corrosion inhibitors may be used in closed or circulating systems to reduce corrosivity.

Applications span oil and gas, pipelines, maritime structures, bridges and infrastructure, automotive and aerospace components, and water treatment facilities. Standards and testing—such as ISO 12944 for protective coatings, NACE guidelines, and ASTM methods for adhesion, salt spray resistance, and electrochemical testing—support specification, qualification, and quality control. Regular inspection and timely re‑coating or replacement preserve protection over the service life.
